NYC FIRE GUARD

NYC FIRE GUARD SERVICE

Does your NYC building need a Fireguard? The New York Fire Department is a group of selfless and brave New Yorkers that we all hope we never have to call. Part of avoiding expensive and dangerous fires in your NYC buildings is to enlist the help of a fire guard. Business owners in NYC must adhere to a strict set of guidelines set forth by the NYFD. One of these little known guidelines is working with a FDNY Certified Fireguard.

  • What Is a Fireguard?

A fireguard is a person trained in fire prevention and safety. These trained professionals are responsible for identifying the first signs of a fire when a home or business' fire prevention systems are out of service. Fire guards are on patrol 24 hours a day until the official fire prevention systems are back up and running. To learn more about how many fire guards you need for a specific area, click here.

All of our trained fire guards have established a professional working relationship with local, state, and federal agencies. It is their responsibility to report any areas where you are susceptible to a fire and help you rectify these before it's too late. With the assistance of a New York City fire guard, you can not only keep your business safe but reduce the risk of fines should your business be inspected. New York City takes fire prevention very seriously, and there are strict and severe penalties and litigations for not adhering to the regulations. Having a certified fire guard on duty dramatically reduces these costly consequences.

  • What Training Do They Have?

In accordance with the requirements of the FDNY, fire guards must be trained and tested in fire prevention and reporting. Working as an authorized fire guard is restricted to individuals who have been successfully tested by the FDNY. A Certificate of Fitness for Citywide Fire Guard For Impairment is required. All of our fire guards meet all state requirements.

  • What Services Do They Offer?

When the fire prevention system in your business is down, whether it is planned or unplanned, New York requires you to have a fire guard on patrol 24 hours a day. Typically, one fire guard is a sign for every 50,000 square feet of building floor area. If your business is larger than this, additional fire guards will be assigned.

  • Orientation and Inspections

Some of their duties include working closely with the fire safety director to establish the orientation of the building. This means becoming familiar with the layout and specifics of the particular building. Fire guards are responsible for identifying entry routes to the affected area, the location of hazardous materials, the location of portable fire extinguishers, and the extent of the out-of-service condition of the fire prevention system.

  • Daily Reporting

Fire guards are responsible for making regular inspections of an assigned area. During these checks, they should inspect all exits, stairways, and hallways. They check the doors to make sure they are operable, and ensure that self-closing doors are not blocked. Fire guards are responsible for making sure that exits are appropriately labeled and the entire affected area is checked daily for ignition sources. They are required to keep a detailed inspection record along with a daily log listing:

    • The number of inspections completed
    •  any defects that were found
    •  any violations that were found
    •  and the name, date, Certificate of Fitness number, and signature of the guard who completed the inspections.
  • Additional Services

Fire guards also help business owners comply with New York statutes when repairing sprinkler systems, constructing new buildings, and utilizing acetylene torches. Along with strict adherence to the New York fire department fire guard guidelines, GuardSecurity fire guards assist with strategic planning and placement of security cameras, as well as the implementation of dedicated security officers.
